Each year, Sanrio (サンリオ, Sanrio) runs a popularity contest pitting their favourite characters against eachother in a fan vote. With 2023, comes the 38th iteration of the competition. In recent years, fan favourites Hello Kitty and My Melody have been dethroned by the shy, rosy-cheeked Cinnamoroll.
The white dog has topped every ranking since 2015, briefly being overtaken by Pompompurin in 2016 and Hello Kitty in 2019, but hasn't been far behind both times. This level of dominance hasn't been seen since Pochacco's five consecutive victories from 1991 to 1995, and Hello Kitty's record twelve consecutive victories between 1998 and 2009.
The character's popularity seems unwavering, not just in the character ranking, but in the vast amount of merch being released by Sanrio. He has been featured on pencil cases, backpacks, plush toys, stickers, keychains, picture frames, and clothes. He will definitely be the one to beat this year.
The results for 2023's vote are in. With a record 44,487,850 votes, 168% more than last years. Will Cinnamoroll be overtaken by last year's runner ups Pompompurin or Kuromi, or will there be a new surprise winner?
